Coaching is a great way to get involved with youth, whether it is your own child, whether you are looking to volunteer in your new community, or whether you are looking to give back to your softball community. At MYGS, we have had coaches in all the above categories. We are 100% volunteer-run, and are always looking for help!
For youth softball, coaching can mean anything from teaching the inner workings of the swing, to teaching players that's ok to make a mistake, to holding a player's hand who is nervous in their first team sport experience.
Below are the typical on-field roles MYGS uses:
Head coach
Responsible for organizing, running practices and managing games. Able to teach the game to children in their age division. Consults with assistant coaches and determines starting lineups, batting order, and substitution plan.
Assistant coach
Assists head coach in running practices, coaching during games. Able to teach individual skills (hitting, fielding, etc.) one-on-one, possibly after guidance from head coach.
Helper
Helps coaches in organizing, running practices, but does not need specific softball knowledge. This can be helpful at any level, but especially instructional (U8 & U6).
